Visiting Death Valley
Death Valley National Park is one of the most visited places during trips around California. The valley owes its name to extremely high temperatures.
To see the whole valley, you must reserve all day for sightseeing. It would be ideal to stay near or in the very valley to see the sunrise, which is an unforgettable view. There are several campsites and hotels in the valley. Reservations must be made in advance or you should count on a bit of luck.
Campsites are open seasonally when the temperatures are not extreme yet and they have a different standard, in some of them there is even no water. There is one main road in the park and several smaller asphalt as well as off-road trails. However most routes can be easily moved down by every car.
What is important, there is also a petrol station. Although the prices are higher than the standard, but we are sure that when the air-conditioning is on we will not run out of petrol and we will not die in the valley of death Besides, it would be rather difficult because, regardless of the season, Death Valley National Park is visited by at least several hundred tourists at the same time. And at every vantage point there are at least a dozen of cars, like at every major attraction in the USA.
Visiting Death Valley – Dante’s View
We start the sightseeing with a journey uphill of a dozen of miles to the first vantage point. The area at first looks normal, but overcoming the last miles we are already going along a winding and narrow mountain road. Arriving at the car park which is at 1669 meters, there is a magnificent panorama of the Death Valley in front of you. It is very windy at the top and much colder than the rest of the valley.
Visiting Death Valley – Zabirskie Point
This is the best place to take spectacular photos. It takes its name from an American entrepreneur with Polish roots. He was the president of the Pacific Coast Borax Company extracting borax in the Valley. One of many mining elements from which had been famous before it became a tourist attraction.
Landscape, due to the threatening rock formations called the Badlands, looks unbelievable. Depending on the angle of sunlight, they shimmer with innumerable amount of colours.
Golden Canyon
This is another point on the route between Zabirskie Point and Bad Water. We cover the canyon on foot, it is 2.5 km long and at the end there is a huge red wall called Red Cathedral.
Devil’s Golf Course
This is a huge area that is covered with clay solids created by strong wind, dried by the sun and covered with salt from a dried-up lake. To get there, you have to leave the main asphalt road and turn into the gravel one. After about 10 minutes you will be there.
Be careful where and how you put your feet because the edges of the salt blocks are very sharp and the fall would be painful.
Badwater Basin – The hottest place in the world
It is 85.5 meters below sea level. It’s the lowest point in North America. This is where the highest air temperature in the world, 56 Celsius degrees, was recorded. You can feel it there, it is terribly hot and a few-meter walk is a lot of effort. Salt decks are remains of a huge salt lake that has evaporated because of temperature, but water is still accumulating there after heavy rainfall.
Going deep into the Death Valley you can admire such wonderful views.
